Description

This document supports creating digital communities to strengthen rural extension programs for small farmers in Latin America and the Caribbean. Current digital technologies enable a new communication and organization of extension services, which is part of a broad technological transformation that integrates human knowledge and, while it may present challenges, also offers development opportunities. Based on practical experiences in the region, the proposal is to establish open and decentralized extension systems that combine in-person and digital interactions with a focus on knowledge exchange, markets, and economic and social organization. This approach, known as Mixed Rural Extension Systems (SISMER), can be adapted to various institutional and territorial realities.
